The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Government of India. 


NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. 


It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses.

CSIR Innovation Award for School Children (CIASC-2011)

Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) is the premier Industrial R&D Organization in India. On the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee in 2002, CSIR initiated Invention Award for school children to create 
awareness, interest and motivation for Intellectual Property amongst children.  


AWARD


The  award  has  been renamed as ‘CSIR Innovation Award for School Children (CIASC-2011)’.  On the
occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day which is celebrated through out the world on 26 th April,   CSIR  invites applications for the  award.

APPLICATION

Applicant must provide the details of the innovation submitted for the award in not more than 5000 words in
English/Hindi including an abstract (in not more than 100 words), authenticated (by giving seal and date)
and sent through the Principal / Head of the School where the student is enrolled and personal details on a
separate page as follows:

Title of the Innovation, Name, date of birth, school and residential address, class, telephone no. (residence
/ school), e-mail address.

In case of proposals already selected for state, national, international or equivalent awards, only the subject
matter covering the improvements need to be submitted for consideration of CIASC-2011.Innovations
Published/Exhibited  during the period January 1 to October 31,2011 may  be considered for the 
award.

The applications for the award not exceeding 5000 words in English/Hindi with requisite drawings/photographs will be  considered. The write-up must describe the subject matter in a problem-solution mode and highlighting  the novel features of the innovation and its advantages.

APPLICANT’S ELLIGIBILITY
Any Indian student enrolled in an Indian school below the age of 18 years as on 31 st July 2011 can apply.  A Student  can make only one entry.   Proposals can be submitted by a student or a group of students.

INNOVATION
The innovation submitted should be one that is novel and utilitarian. It could be a new concept or idea
or a solution to an existing problem or completely a new method/ process/ device/ utility. The concept of the
innovation  should have been proved through a model, a prototype or experimental data.  It would be
preferred if the focus of students on their  innovation is on ’Intelligent Toys’. However, innovations
related to other topics would  equally be eligible. Essays/mere compilation of information from published literature/downloaded from internet will not  be considered for award. Details of any assistance/ guidance provided by teachers/parents/friends or  others must be appropriately  acknowledged.

WHOM TO SEND

Typed applications to be sent by Registered Post/Courier to: Head, Innovation Protection Unit-CSIR, 
NISCAIR Building, 14 Satsang Vihar Marg, Special Institutional Area, New Delhi - 110 067 with the envelope  marked on top left hand corner 'CIASC-2011'. You may also send application through email addressed to  head.ipu@niscair.res.in.  However, a hard copy should also follow through post with Principal’s  authentication.

DEADLINE
Applications received on or before 31stOctober 2011 will be considered for the Award. 

NO OF PRIZES AND CASH AWARD

Prizes: There are in all 30 prizes. Besides a certificate, the cash awards are: 

First Prize      (1 No.)                                    Rs.  1,00,000/-

Second Prize (2 Nos.)                                 Rs.  50,000/- each

Third Prize     (3 Nos.)                                Rs.  30,000/- each

Fourth Prize   (4 Nos.)                               Rs.   20,000/- each

Fifth Prize      (20 nos.)                                 Rs.   10,000/-  each

It is not mandatory that all the above 30  prizes  for the award would be given.

SELECTION
The awardees will be selected by a high level Awards Selection Committee.  If required, the short listed candidates may be  called for Interview at Delhi or at any other appropriate place.  The decision of the Award Selection Committee / CSIR  will be final and binding on the applicants and no enquiries / correspondence in this regard will be entertained.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARD
The Award will be announced on January 1, 2012, at New Delhi and would be communicated to the Awardees only

INTRODUCTION OF YOGA IN SCHOOLS

BACKGROUND

 In pursuance of the decision of Cabinet Committee On Economic Affair 

(CCEA) Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) 

has transferred four components of the Scheme on “Quality Improvement in 

Schools” to National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). 

“Introduction of Yoga in Schools” is one  of the components to  be implemented by 

NCERT. 

Yoga has been an integral  part of Health and Physical Education that has 

been a compulsory subject up to the secondary school stage since 1988.   The NCF 

2005 adopted a holistic definition of health in which yoga is an integral part of it. 

            Both yoga and physical education contribute to not merely the physical 

development of the child but have a positive impact on psychosocial and mental 

development as well.  Playing group games have a positive impact on individual self 

esteem, promotes better interaction among children, imparts values of co-operation, 

sharing and to deal with both victory and defeat.  Similarly yoga practice contributes 

to the overall development of the child  and various studies have shown that it 

contributes to flexibility and muscular fitness and also corrects postural defects 

among school children.  

             There is  also a growing realization that  the health needs of adolescents, 

particularly their reproductive and sexual health needs, require to be addressed. 

Since these needs predominantly relate to sex and sexuality, which is culturally a 

very sensitive area, they are deprived of opportunities to get appropriate information. 

There is a need to provide children accurate and authentic information and help 

them to construct knowledge and acquire  life skills, so that they cope up with the 

concerns related to the process of growing up, counter stress and strains and cope 

up with examination stress.   

Within this overall framework both  yoga and physical education are seen as 

routes for achieving overall development of children.
