SARVASHIKSHA ABHYAN
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is an ambitious programme of the Govt. of India. It aims at providing useful and relevant elementary education for all children in the 6 to 14 age group by the year 2010. The programme opens up opportunities for all the children to develop their talents and capabilities through the provision of community owned quality education in a mission mode. The Abhyan was launched in Lakshadweep on Jan.1, 2003. Twelve Resource Persons have already been appointed to take care of the 341 out of school children in all islands.

Lakshadweep islands lie scattered in the Arabian Sea between 111 to 222 Nautical Miles off the cost of Kerala. There are 27 islands of which 10- are inhabited. As per 2001 census Lakshadweep has a population of 60,595 of which 31,118 are males and 29,477 are females. Lakshadweep enjoys third place in the country with 87.5% literacy, the male literacy rate is 81.56%.Though in Lakshadweep Adult Education Programme was begun as early as 1987, with the adoption of total literacy campaign in 1992 at national level, the Adult Education centers opened in 1987 were wound up. Presently only 6 Vidya Kendras for neo Literals are being run in the islands. Lakshadweep Administration has an ambitious programme to make Lakshadweep a totally literate territory by educating the identified 6504 adult illiterates. The island wise break up is as under.

The Lakshadweep Adult Literacy Mission Authority has been set up. The proposal of the department for approval of the scheme and release of funds is awaiting clearance from the HRD Ministry.
